Work out the swap and read the saying back, as quickly as you can.

  1. Pick a coded letter, then say which real letter it stands for.It fills in everywhere that coded letter appears, which is what makes the next word readable.
  2. Start with the short words and the three letters you were given.A one-letter word is A or I. A three-letter word with the commonest letter at the end is very often THE.
  3. Change your mind whenever the line stops making sense. This is the one people get wrong. Nothing here tells you a letter is right, on purpose, because a game that did would just be guessing with a tick next to it. Say a letter, read what it does to the other words, and take it back if it made nonsense. Taking it back costs nothing.

Scored on time.

What the words mean
The line:
the short saying you are trying to read. It is an old proverb or a plain sentence of ours, never a quotation from anybody
Coded letter:
a letter as it appears in the line. Each one stands for one real letter, the same one everywhere
The swap:
which real letter each coded letter stands for. It is the same swap all the way through, and no letter ever stands for itself
Given:
the 3 letters filled in for you at the start, so there is somewhere to begin
