Five Marks
Work out the hidden five-letter word in as few guesses as you can.
- Type any real 5-letter word and send it.It does not have to be likely. An opening guess is worth more for the letters it rules out than for the letters it hits.
- Read the mark under each letter.Right means that letter is in the word and in that place. Moved means it is in the word but somewhere else. Out means it is not in the word.
- Use what the marks ruled out, and guess again.A repeated letter is only marked as many times as the word actually holds it. Guess a word with two Es against a word with one, and the first E is marked and the second comes back out. That is not a bug, it is the answer telling you there is only one.
Scored on guesses.
What the words mean
- The word:
- the hidden five-letter word. That is the thing you are looking for
- Guess:
- one real 5-letter word, typed in. You get 6 of them and then the round is over
- Mark:
- the verdict on one letter of your guess. There are three, and each has a word and a glyph, so nothing here depends on telling colours apart
- Right:
- ■, in the word, in the right place
- Moved:
- ▧, in the word, but somewhere else
- Out:
- □, not in the word at all
- Word list:
- the words we accept as a guess. It is much longer than the list we set answers from, so you can try a word we would never make you find
