Find the secret city. Every guess tells you how far away it is and which way it lies, so two good guesses narrow the world a long way.
- Type a city and send it. Anywhere in the world will do.Back comes the distance in kilometres and an arrow: the direction the secret city lies in from the one you named. Open somewhere far from anywhere, such as Sydney or Lima, and you learn more than a lucky poke at your own capital.
- Name a second city in the direction the arrow pointed. Now you have two distances from two known places, and there are usually only a few cities left that could be that far from both. This is the guess that does the work.
- Watch for hotter and colder. That is only ever a comparison with the guess before. Here is what people get wrong: the arrow is the direction you would set off in, not the direction on a flat map, so a city can be east of you on the atlas and the arrow still says north east. On a round earth that is the shorter way.

What the words mean
- The city:
- the secret city you are looking for. It is one of the 231 on the list, chosen by today's date, and it is the same one for everybody in the world today
- The list:
- the 231 cities you may name, spread across every continent. You can only guess a city on it, and the answer is always on it too, so nothing you are looking for is hiding outside it
- Distance:
- how far the secret city is from the one you named, in kilometres, measured the short way round the actual globe rather than across a flat map
- The arrow:
- which way the secret city lies from your guess, to the nearest of eight compass points. It is the direction you would set off in, which on a round earth is not always the direction it looks on an atlas
- Hotter:
- ▲, nearer the city than your last guess
- Colder:
- ▼, further from the city than your last guess
- Guess:
- one city, typed in. You get 6 of them, and the first one is worth spending somewhere far away
