Over the Line

Get all five right. Knowing who borders whom is half of it; knowing which way round they sit is the other half.

Name the country you would walk into. Not any neighbour: the one that way.

Today’s board

Right, best first · points

Nobody has solved this one today. Make an account and your name goes up here when you do. This board ranks solved runs, because it ranks them on the clock and a part-solved grid cannot be compared with a finished one. Every go earns points on the leaderboards either way.

This week, this month and all time

Over the Line

Get all five right. Knowing who borders whom is half of it; knowing which way round they sit is the other half.

  1. Read the border: a country and an arrow.North of Kenya means the country you would walk into if you left Kenya heading north. That is Ethiopia. Somalia borders Kenya too, but it is east, so it is the wrong answer to this question.
  2. Start typing and pick a country from the list.Common names work: Burma, Holland, USA, Czech Republic. If a name is refused it is because it is not a country on the list, not because you spelt it oddly.
  3. Send it, and you are told at once what was actually across the line. Here is what people get wrong. An answer stands, so there is no going back, and the direction is measured between the two countries as wholes. A country that sprawls a long way, like Russia or Brazil, lies in the direction of its middle rather than of the nearest corner of it.

Scored on right.

What the words mean
The line:
a land border, the kind you could walk across. Sea crossings are not borders here, so nothing over water is ever the answer
The direction:
which way the neighbour lies, to the nearest of eight compass points, measured between the middles of the two countries
A round:
one border and one answer. There are 5 in a day and your answer stands once you have given it
Right:
how many of the 5 you got. Five is a clean sweep, and it is meant to be reachable rather than lucky
Disputed borders:
borders two countries argue over, such as Kashmir or Western Sahara. None of them are in this game at all, so you will never be marked wrong on somebody else's quarrel
