Work from the crossings.Nine squares belong to two entries. One letter you are sure of halves the work on the other clue, and that is the whole method of a crossword.
Change your mind as often as you like.Typing over a square replaces what was there, and nothing is scored until you finish or stop. A wrong letter costs only the time it takes to notice.

What the words mean

Across:: the three words that read left to right, numbered 1, 4 and 5
Down:: the three words that read top to bottom, numbered 1, 2 and 3
Crossing:: a square shared by an across entry and a down one. There are nine, and they are where a crossword is actually solved
Blacked out:: the four squares nothing is written in. They are the shape of the grid rather than a puzzle
