- Type a word that differs from the one above it by exactly one letter.It is added to the ladder, and the letter that moved is marked.
- Keep going until you land on the target word.Every rung has to be a real word on its own. That is the bit people get wrong: you cannot pass through four letters that are not a word to reach one that is.
- Finish, and see the par.Par is the shortest ladder that exists, found by a solver. Matching it is the boast.

- Ladder:
- the whole run of words from the first to the target
- Par:
- the fewest rungs anybody could use. A solver works it out before you start
