What the words mean
- Across:
- the words that read left to right. How many there are depends on the day's shape
- Down:
- the words that read top to bottom. How many there are depends on the day's shape
- Crossing:
- a square shared by an across entry and a down one. They are where a crossword is actually solved, and a shape with more of them is easier to finish
- Blacked out:
- the squares nothing is written in. They are the shape of the grid rather than a puzzle, and they move from day to day
- The shape:
- where the black squares sit today, and it has a name: Quarters, Waist, Buttons, Crossbar, Post, Sleepers, Stitches, Lopsided or Pip. Nine of them, so two days running rarely look alike
