- Down:
- the words that read top to bottom. How many there are depends on the day's shape
- Crossing:
- a square shared by an across entry and a down one. They are where a crossword is actually solved, and a shape with more of them is easier to finish
- Blacked out:
- the squares nothing is written in. They are the shape of the grid rather than a puzzle, and they move from day to day
- The shape:
- where the black squares sit today, and it has a name: Pip, Crossbar, Quarters, Steps, Letterbox, Tower, Girder, Junction or Box. Nine of them, from one black square to sixteen, so two mornings running do not look alike
