What the words mean
- Across:
- the three words that read left to right, numbered 1, 4 and 5
- Down:
- the three words that read top to bottom, numbered 1, 2 and 3
- Crossing:
- a square shared by an across entry and a down one. There are nine, and they are where a crossword is actually solved
- Blacked out:
- the four squares nothing is written in. They are the shape of the grid rather than a puzzle
